In some playfully exciting news from LEGO® Australia, the purveyors of play, have turned Sydney’s Darling Harbour into a playground with 20 life-sized LEGO Minifigures taking over the precinct, kicking off from August 10, 2023.
From August 10 – August 14, families and fans are invited to reconnect and play as the LEGO Minifigures pay Darling Harbour a visit. The precinct’s takeover follows insights from the latest LEGO® Play Well Study (2022) that shows 41% parents admit that their family doesn’t play enough together, while nearly 8 in 10 children wish they could play more with their parents.
This free play event will provide exciting moments for everyone to enjoy, whether it’s moonwalking, break dancing, playing hide and seek or practising air guitar, you’ll be able to come along and play.
Aussies will also be invited to join in on Play Hour (and a half!) on World Play Day. Whether that’s taking a longer lunch break, playing in the evening together, or visiting the LEGO Play activation in Darling Harbour as a family, the LEGO Group invites everyone to take part.

“We are excited to be celebrating an incredible milestone that only very few companies worldwide have been able to achieve. At 90 years old, the LEGO Group is certainly in rarefied air and highlights the brand’s longevity through generations. We want to showcase our passion for play with all Australians by turning Sydney’s Darling Harbour into a playground, bringing the community together to celebrate the power of play which is embodied in our brand since the first toy was created by our founder, Ole Kirk Kristiansen in 1932.
Troy Taylor, Vice President and General Manager of LEGO Australia & New Zealand
“Amidst a global pandemic, we’ve learnt that play matters more than ever before which is why we want to bring back more play throughout the day than ever before. We’re encouraging all fans and families to find some time to play, whether that is discovering our magical array of Minifigures playing at Darling Harbour, or spending time getting back to the basics of play at home through fun activities with the family!” continued Troy.
What’s more, LEGO Australia will be unveiling a surprise friend built by the one and only LEGO Certified Professional in the Southern Hemisphere, Ryan ‘The Brickman’ McNaught to join the Minifigures, making this playdate one fans and families do not want to miss.
LEGO Play Ambassadors will also be joining in on the celebrations, with an appearance from Benji Marshall.
“Whether it be playing with my favourite LEGO set when I was a kid or playing rugby on the field, play has been part of my life. Now that I’m a dad, I can see just how important it is to take the time to play, every day. Returning to the West Tigers as an Assistant Coach is also allowing me to play a pivotal part in supporting the next generation of athletes that are playing to win. It shows the power of play, to inspire and motivate not just in the NRL but every day!”
